Personal Philosophy and Ethos

I believe in the power of helping others and I have lived my life in the service of others, through the military, physical therapy and rehabilitation, and through martial arts.

Anyone who comes to our dojo, whether they seek improved fitness, recovery from chronic injury or martial arts instruction, deserves the best we can offer.
It is my responsibility to and pledge to give you the attention and detailed instruction that you are paying for.
You are not just a client or a student: You're part of the family.
Martial Arts
Military Service
Martial Arts has been my passion for over 38 years. Though I have achieved advanced black belt ranks in karate, aikido and jujitsu, there are two highlights in my journey. The first was living and training in Japan which had a considerable impact on my understanding of the path of Budo. The second was raising my children and instilling martial arts discipline and values in them and some of their friends along the way.
To me, martial arts is so much more than knowing how to fight. It's a lot more about knowing how to live.

Professional Career
I proudly served my country for 20 years in the United States Air Force. My career included training and experience as a Medic, Physical Medicine Specialist, Unit Fitness Instructor, NCO Academy Instructor and First Sergeant. Martial arts played a significant role in my service and helped to instill the warrior ethos that was an invaluable part of a successful career.
Commitment To Fitness
An important aspect of martial arts training is a commitment to health and fitness. In my opinion, a martial arts teacher should always "walk the talk." If you are paying someone to instruct you in martial arts, self-defense and personal discipline, he or she should reflect what they teach in mind, body and spirit.
I enjoyed over 30 years experience as a physical therapist assistant during and after my military service. I have an extensive background in manual therapy, orthopedics and sports medicine as well as certifications as a Medical and Corrective Exercise Specialist. My experience in physical therapy and rehab gives me a unique perspective on how to translate my knowledge and skills to my martial arts students. See our Fitness section for more details.
